The community of Homestead has a population of approximately 100. Today the district remains established in the primary production of cattle. The area has also been marked in history as having been a key stakeholder in the sawmilling and meatworks industries. More recently the mining industry has also been present; with the Thalanga mine situated ten kilometres from the township.
Homestead State School has seen fluctuations in enrolments which is reflected in the economic wellbeing of the community.
As a parent, community and P&C member of a small town school, I just want to say that Homestead State School it is a great little school to be a part of. The staff are great and very welcoming. The communication between staff and parents is awesome, they are always updating you on the progress of your child and where they are at, also the kids like to show you what they are doing at school. The children are great and friendly, they are also getting one on one learning which I think is awesome. The community and P&C have a great connection with the school , they get in and assist whenever they can like catering and preparing for events.
